Elliot Handler dies at 95; co-founder of Mattel, inventor of Hot Wheels

Elliott Handler - wynalzca Barbie i Hot Wheels założyciel Mattela zmarł w wyniku niewydolności serca w wieku 95 lat.
To właśnie jego projekty mebelków i domków dla lalek były inspiracją dla wielu firm w tym również firmy Kidkraft. To dzięki niemu, a właściwie jego żonie Ruth miliony dzieci na świecie mogły bawić się lalką przedstawiającą modną nastolatkę z wąska talią i biustem. Lalka została nazwana Barbie jako zdrobnienie od Barbary, córki Państwa Handler. Historia firmy Mattel to jak bajka o Kopciuszku, jak wiele w Ameryce firm powstała w garażu przy domu, początkowo produkując ramki do obrazków, z czasem skupiając się na produkcji zabawek. Sam pan Handler nie wierzył z początku w sukces Barbie, twierdząc, że żadna matka nie kupi dziecku lalki z biustem, pamiętajmy, że był wtedy rok 1956!
Mattel w dołączył do grupy Fortune 500 w 1965 roku.

Elliot Handler dies at 95; co-founder of Mattel, inventor of Hot Wheels

Elliot Handler, a pioneering toy maker who co-founded Mattel and invented Hot Wheels, has died. He was 95.

Handler died Thursday from heart failure at his Century City home, according to his daughter, Barbara Segal, after whom the Barbie doll was named.

In 1945, Handler and his wife, Ruth, founded Mattel out of a garage workshop in Los Angeles with their friend Harold "Matt" Matson. They called it Mattel, a name fashioned from Matson and Elliot.

The first Mattel products were picture frames, but Handler soon developed a side business making dollhouse furniture out of picture frame scraps. After the Handlers bought out Matson, they turned Mattel's focus to toys...
